Blog Banter #19 – CSM-Power to the people or puppets of CCP

Welcome to the nineteenth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week to post articles pertaining to the said topic. The resulting articles can either be short or quite extensive, either funny or dead serious, but are always a great fun to read! Any questions about the EVE Blog Banter should be directed to crazykinux@gmail.com. Check out other EVE Blog Banter articles at the bottom of this post!

This months topic comes to us from @evepress, and he asks: The CSM: CCP’s Meta Game? – The CSM, an eve players voice to CCP.Right? In the grand scheme of things yes, the players bring up issues and the CSM presents them to CCP. But in its current iteration the CSM was supposed to be given small authority to assign CCP assets toprojects that the CSM thought needed work on. As it has not come outthis was not the case. So fellow bloggers, is the CSM worth it, has the CSM improved the game in any way, or is it just a well thought out scamby CCP to give us players a false sense of input in the game? What’s your take?

So this is my second Blog Banter but my first official one (I sneaked one in before realising I was suppose to sign up to them..)

Now I haven’t been playing Eve for long and to be honest politics in any shape or form don’t really interest me, however that being said I did vote in the CSM elections and the person I voted for is now Chair of the CSM 5 crew (go Mynxee).

So what is the CSM to me.. To me the CSM is a group of dedicated Eve Online players put into office in a fair election process were we get the opportunity to vote for the ones we think will represent our individual needs within the Eve Online universe (a big job in itself). Now the fact that CCP have allowed the CSM to exist is in my opinion a bit of a double edged sword. The CSM are elected based on their campaign promises on the changes that they will drive forward with CCP during their term. CCP as a business while still dedicated to providing a working scalable sandbox for us to play in also have to develop and build their business so they can continue to make money and take a larger market share. Now as a business how does CCP balance this?? working with their players and still pushing ahead with making money…

Now I did have a couple of ideas (just off the top of my head) but like all ideas after a bit more research I found that they would be pointless to mention. Like I said at the start politics and me don’t mix very well so this post isn’t going to be as long as some of the other blog banters will be. Below I’ve list what I think are the key points I think we need to remember.

1. The CSM’s relationship with CCP is something that no other game I’ve encountered has in place for allowing input from the player base.
2. The CSM are elected and support by the player base.
3. CCP are a business and as such while still being dedicated to improving the game for us, they are still a business that needs to grow and make money.
4. Nothing comes without a price.. if we want Icarna, or Dust 514 then it’s going to have a knock on effect on getting other things fixed (see point 3)
5. Changes take time, code changes, hardware changes all take time, effort and money and while it’s annoying to have bugs in the game, there are bugs in every game out there.
6. EVE Online is a game, granted a game we all enjoy and pay RL money to play but it’s still a game (one which I shall continue to play for a long time).

My hat goes off to the members of the CSM, they have a hard job to do and only limited resources, I wish them all the best for the future and I will be here to support them where and when I can.

A badly programmed product endlessly adding new “things” before finishing / fixing what has already been provided introduced is not growing but thwarting it’s own growth.

The CSM is still a gimic. That board is to placate us, to make the lie that needs to be told us still gullible to pay to play and accept the lie. Those of us gullible to believe anything CCP says and addicted to the game just ignor the CSM and don’t vote read their nonsense and will play until we get truly sick and tired of the okey doke.
